We still have contact every day. Working in the restaurant from a young age made my siblings and me brilliant communicators.
It made us closer as a family, but a little awkward socially. I describe our family as the Transformers. Separately, we can do our own thing, but the minute we start locking in, we become a force to be reckoned with.
We become Optimus Prime. Food is the fourth child in our family. There was nothing recreational in their lives other than food.
Life was one big deep fat fryer. We communicated through food. Everything was about food growing up — and it still is. I had a hole in my heart, a twisted leg and jaundice. Our family home was a static caravan, so I was officially trailer trash for a while. I imagine space was tight with my brother, Kwoklyn, and sister, Oilen, there too.
Mum and Dad were put on a housing list. I was six months old when we moved to a new council house at nearby Beaumont Leys.
Kwoklyn and I were inseparable and shared bunk beds for a while. I liked Superman and he had a poster of Peter Andre. Dad liked that the restaurant was family ran and would often parade us around.
There were even times when we sang carols at the tables to regular customers much to my horror now. At sixteen I left school and assumed my role as a full time chef at The Panda. My days were spent preparing ingredients for the night ahead and in the evenings, I was creating amazing Cantonese and Szechuan dishes. Business was booming, we even made it into The Good Food Guide, where we stayed for several years. I'd love to see him cook on tv once again.
