What is the difference between handmade and homemade

I imagine lots of foodies trying to out-foodie each other rather than being sensible. View my flickr. I'm sure I've heard the terms "artisan baker" and "artisan cheese maker" on programmes like the Radio 4 Food Programme. I always take it as meaning "hand crafted" in one sense or another. I'm not sure it can legitimately be applied to a Farmers Market. Henry Ford. When I used to work up in London there was an artisan bakery. And yes, you paid extra for getting something a bit more special that your local bakers crusty white!

So for me artisan means something of good quality, a little bit different and therefore expensive. It does depend what you're after though as sometimes a crusty white loaf at half the price will be what you fancy for lunch rather than a sourdough, sunflower topped roll! What about "crafted"?

Try and catch up with this one.. What a crafter!!! The term Artisan as I understand it implies that the person is skilled in an art to the degree that hand made or home made comes nowhere near. I could hand make a coffee table, or make a coffee table at home and class the coffee table as either, but considering I'm a 3d card making gasman who has never made any thing from wood who could never hope to be worthy of the term Artisan you wouldn't want to put a cup on it.

That to me defines Artisan. More than a whiff of the WI around it. Handmade is what I use mostly because it sort of explains it nicely. Made by hand. That or hand crafted. Artisan is a word I like, just because of the sound of it. But I am not sure what the word really means to me.

Skilled manual worker maybe and starting to see it associated with home baked breads and stuff at farmers markets or posh deli's. Really, I wish we as women had a good equivalent to "craftsman". Craftsperson or craftswoman just sounds odd, and crafter isn't quite the same thing. Emma www. All rights reserved. Yes No. OK Cancel. Sturdier fabrics are better than ones that have no weight to them. And this applies whether your mask is handmade or homemade.
